Project Don Bosco Mission
Our mission is to improve the standard of living for the people of Guatemala through the education of their children.
Project Don Bosco History
St. John Bosco was a friend to children who were poor, abandoned or at risk, hence our name reflects his ministry in his lifetime. His ministry was to give children a chance at a full life.
In 1998, Deacon Richard LaRossa adopted this philosophy during a missionary trip to the people of Central America. It was at that time that he adopted the mission statement above which continues today!
At the core of the program are the parish of St. Raymond of Penyafort in East Rockaway NY and our sister parishesSt. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Novillero, Santa Lucia, Solola, Guatemala. The project uses different facilities of each parish, but neither parish administers the program. It is self- directing and self-sufficient. Although all the churches are Roman Catholic, the program is open to children and sponsors of anyfaith.

How are the children chosen for sponsorship?
The children are selected by the Parish Council in Guatemala. So, we can help as many families as possible, only one childper family may be sponsored.
MayI choose to sponsor a girl or a boy?
As a sponsor, you usually have a choice. You may ask for a girl or a boy and a child or a teenager.
What is the cost to sponsor a child?
For $20 dollarsa month ($240.00a year) you can sponsor a child and ensure that the child remains in school. Once you agree to sponsorship, we ask that you consider this as an annual commitment.
How is the sponsorship donation distributed?
Every month the family of each sponsored child receives a paymentin Guatemalan currency, it is the equivalent of your $20 US dollars. That money is used to provide for the needs of the child’s family. It is meant to supplement the family’s income, ensuring that yoursponsored child will remain a student in school and not be sent to work full time in the fields.
How much of my sponsorship donation is given to the sponsored child’sfamily?
Since Project Don Bosco’s administration is all unpaid volunteers, your entire donation is given to your sponsored child’s family. All office supplies and correspondence costs are donated by fund raising events.
What expenses are covered by my donation?
Your $20 helps to provide for nourishing food, medical and dental care, basic
clothing, the promise to remain in school and the knowledge that someone cares.
